Monitoring developmental outcome of very low birth weight infants.

Fernandes et al.1 relatam a prevalência e os fatores de risco para atraso no neurodesenvolvimento em crianças de muito baixo peso ao nascer. Para identificar tais atrasos, utilizaram a terceira edição das escalas Bayley de desenvolvimento infantil (BSID-III). Seu estudo fornece novas informações sobre o assunto, visto que a maioria dos estudos prévios sobre o neurodesenvolvimento de crianças de muito baixo peso ao nascer baseou-se na primeira ou na segunda edição das BSID (BSID-I e BSID-II). Essas versões anteriores das BSID avaliavam o funcionamento cognitivo, referido como índice de desenvolvimento mental (MDI) ou escala mental; a função motora, referida como índice de desenvolvimento psicomotor (PDI) ou escala motora; e o comportamento do lactente durante o teste (Escala de Classificação do Comportamento). Embora o MDI das BSID-II não seja um teste de inteligência, escores inferiores a 70 são considerados preditores moderados de um QI inferior a 70, especialmente em crianças com deficiência neurossensorial2. A terceira edição das BSID, que foi utilizada por Fernandes et al., avalia as habilidades cognitivas, linguísticas, motoras, socioemocionais e de comportamento adaptativo. Desta forma, as BSID-III podem fornecer um quadro mais completo das habilidades da criança.
